The penates are gods of the storeroom. Each Roman household worshipped them along with the Lares and Vesta, and they were honored at every family meal and feast with a portion of the family's food thrown to the fire for them. They were also honored on the Kalends, Nones, and Ides of each month, and during major family events. The festival of the Penates is on October 14th. The Penates for the Roman citizens as a large "family" were known as penates publici.
