Archeology Day

10:00 - 3:00 Sat 9 Oct, Mission San José
In celebration of Texas Archaeology month, Southwest Texas Archaeological Society (SWTAS) will participate in Archaeology Day. The SWTAS contribution will be a display about the Roman influence on the New World via the Spanish. Hands-on activities for children
will include assembling a large Roman (styrofoam) arch, and cutting and folding paper models of the missions that can be taken home. They need volunteers to man the booth and especially to help with hands-on activities. Shifts will last from 8:30 - 1200 (set-up and morning) and 12:00 - 3:30 (afternoon and clean up). If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Laura Childs, 210-977-6100 or 210-494-3820, Laura.Childs@us.af.mil.

  1. I found additional info on this...

Mission San José, along with several state and private archaeology and history groups, will celebrate Texas Archaeology Month on Saturday, October 9 from 10am-2pm. This is the third year SWTAS will be joining in the fun. We need your ingenuity and enthusiasm to show visitors what we have to offer. Our booth will highlight Roman influence first in Spain and from there on to the New World. In the past years, children built Roman arches and miniature missions and saw a Roman fort display, while adults could read further about these topics, the AIA, and SWTAS. This year we would like to incorporate any other ideas you may have. Childrens’ activities are especially welcome! Please contact Laura Childs at 210-977-6100 (work) or 210-494-3820 (home), email lacaug@cs.com if you are interested in volunteering or have questions. Even if you are not able to participate in setting up or manning the booth, do bring your family to the event and enjoy a great, FREE archaeological experience! There will be many displays, childrens’ activities, lectures, and demonstrations.
